on 17th January, 1983, following a presidential decree, over 2 million Ghanaians were expelled from Nigeria.

Ghanaians were deported out of worry that they would replace Nigerians in high-paying employment.

President Shehu Shagari issued an executive order in January 1983 to deport two million illegal West African migrants, of which more than half were Ghanaians.

Many had gone to Nigeria because of the oil boom in the 1970s.

Thousands ofpeople died on their way to Ghana.
